Authentic Jew from the Land of Canaan


On the 11th of April, 2013, the exhibition „Authentic Jew from the Land of Canaan“ was opened in the Tolerance Center of the Vilna Gaon State Jewish Museum. Engravings, presented for the public view belong to Alicya B. Schottlas private collection. Exhibition was dedicated for the 15th Anniversary of the bilateral cooperation between Vilnius and Warsaw cities and was opened on the initiative of Vilnius Municipality, on the occasion of the visit of the Mayor of Warsaw Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz. Mayor of Warsaw honored the Tolerance Center, opening „Authentic Jew from the Land of Canaan“ within the frames of the commemorational events.

Director of the Vilna Gaon State Jewish Museum Markas Zingeris, Deputy Mayor of Vilnius Jaroslav Kaminsky and the Curator of the exhibition Pavel Shapiro, heading „Zyd Niemalowany“ Fund, also expressed their greetings during the opening ceremony.

Engravings, exhibited at the Tolerance Center were made in XVII – XVIII c. by the Dutch, Flemish, French, German and Italian masters, depicting the events from the Old Testament as well as the history of Jews, who came to live in Lithuania‘s territories.

Ms. Malgorzata Kasner, Director of the Polish Institute in Lithuania also participated in the opening of the exhibition.

“Authentic Jew from the Land of Canaan“ was displayed till 10th of May, 2013. Exhibition curated by the Artist and Exhibitions Curator of the Vilna Gaon State Jewish Museum Aleksandra Jacovskytė.
